Episode 2: Knowledge is Power, and Power Can Make you Rich
I attended a two day marketing conference in Orlando Florida this weekend. During scheduled breaks, people would gather together, exchange infomation, and get to know one another. Something that is quite commonplace with these types of events. As the day progressed, people continued to exchange information and business cards, and we all looked forward to the Networking Dinner that night.
Now, as I said, this was a MARKETING conference. Not MLM, Not Network Marketing...
MARKETING.
During dinner, the host of the event approached the podium, and, after getting everyone clapping and hooting and hollering, reminded everyone that this was a networking dinner. A chance to meet people, to talk about your business, and to possibily form mastermind groups.
I nudged my business partner in the ribs and suggested he make his way up to the podium. The host was about to allow people to stand in front of the group and give a 60 second speech about their business. Just as in the Super Bowl, Olympics, and other events, people remember WHO was first, and WHAT they had to say.
My business partner delivered a quick synopsis of who we were, what we did, and what we were looking for. He was clear, understandable, knowledgeable, and to the point.
Even before he was done speaking, I had people at our table asking me for information. By the time he returned, we had a small crowd around us with people wanting to exchange information and learn more.
Job well done.
People came, and people went. People said things about their businesses. Who they were, and what they did, and who they were wanting to meet.
Then along comes Joe. Joe didn't do much right. He started too far away from the microphone, then, when he self adusted, he was too close, and too loud. This, for some reason amused Joe. He laughed. Joe has a laugh that is better laughed in a closet than it is in public. As he continued his nervous speech, it was apparent he was pushing an MLM.
It was also apparent he was new to the MLM, and did not understand the product or company he was representing. Joe babbled. Joe stuttered. Joe repeated statements that were no clearer the second time around than they were the first. Although Joe lost his audience about 20 seconds into his time, he spent close to 2 mintues continueing to sell the room. As I waited for someone to appear from the side with the large hook they used in the gong show to pull the contestant from the stage, one of the event staff started clapping.
Cue the music - Joe, your time is up.
Although Joe had more than twice the amount of time my business partner had behindthe microphone, not a single person approached him. I decided that I would go talk to Joe. Ask him a few questions. As I approached his table, I noted that just about everyone around him had one of his business cards. Not in their wallet, or pocket, or PDA Case... but on the table in front of them. I pulled up a chair.
He was still shaking a little from his experience at the podium.
"So, been with these guys long?" I asked him. "Oh, about a month." He replied.
He had bought just about every sales item the company has to offer.
"Really? How's it going for you?" I continued. "Oh, they're really growing." Joe said.
They?
"So, you're recruiting some people?" Joe looked down at his stack of cards. "Umm... no, not really."
During the rest of the night, and the following day, I watched Joe. His delivery method never changed. And neither did his results. Although he managed to give almost everyone at the event a business card, I saw a lot of them left on tables, chairs, the floor, and even in the bathroom trashcan.
Not that I was looking in the bathroom trashcan...
Joe's problem was four fold.
First off, he didn't know enough about the company he was representing. Secondly, he didn't have a clear understanding of the product he was selling. Thirdly, he didn't know his material or presentation. And lastly, he was at the wrong function.
As I have said before - if you don't understand what you're selling, then you cannot possibly expect that the person you are selling to will either. As we all know, a confused mind ALWAYS says "NO".
My team and I are putting together a special report just for Joe. As soon as it's done, Joe will get his copy, and we'll make this report available for everyone else to read. It's a report dealing with not just how to sell, but how to have a lifetime buyer.
I do hope you'll read it.
I know Joe will.
May the streets of your dreams always be paved in gold.
