Episode 13: You Gotta Read The Fine Print FIRST

It's no wonder so many deals go bad, so many people feel hurt, so many people feel mislead. People don't read the fine print... The big secret is reading the fine print FIRST, THEN going back and reading the rest of the deal.

Reason #1 - We like to dream
The human mind is a wonderful thing. It loves making synapes fire, making connections from one memory to another, calculations, reasoning... why do you think conspiracy theories are so fun and entertaining? We're making NEW connections where connections weren't made before.

So, there you are. Talking to someone about their MLM business. They're showing examples of big houses. Big cars. Big checks. And your mind starts to go down that path. Yeah, it'd sure be nice to have a big car, a big house, and a big check...

Reason #2 - We're easily confused
Even Einstein got things wrong from time to time. It nothing we can prevent. We get confused. A great deal of times, less than honest marketers rely on that. They get a person dreaming, and WHAM! they toss some quick figures in to the mix. Our minds are still driving our new car around Maui, and now we have to crunch numbers? What? Huh?

Reason #3 - We don't like to admit defeat
Only one time have I seen an NFL player say, "Here's the big ring I got for losing the Super Bowl"... and there have been a lot of players who lost the big game. We don't like to admit when we're wrong, when we don't understand something, or when we're confused... so, we've been in the clouds, we got a bunch of numbers thrown at us, and now we're too ashamed to tell the guy to slow down, or to go back a little bit... happens all the time, and they count on it.

Reason #4 - We like to be part of the crowd
There's a reason marketers like having group meetings. What they'll tell you is that they prefer to better utulize their time. That making a group presentation one time is easier than making the presentation 50 times a day. The truth is, they want you to be a part of the herd. When a herd forms, it develops one mind set. If one animal in the herd is spooked, they ALL run. Likewise, is one animal in the herd drinks of water, they all do. When a herd's life is in danger, it's the slowest and weakest that get picked off first. So, when people in the crowd start signing up... well, we don't want to be left behind! We want to go sing up too!

Reason #5 - Our minds, like our bodies, tire
Try this experiment: Memorize the order of 7 random cards from a playing deck. Now, go work out - HARD - for 30 minutes. Then come back in, and attempt to memorize the order of another 7 cards. Chances are slim to none that you'll be able to do the second memorization as easily as the first one. Our bodies and minds are of one nature. When one tires, so does the other. In Network Marketing meetings, you're going to be sent through a series of emotional highs and lows so fast that you will litterally be exhausted at the end of it. Now, we've seen our possible future. We were allowed to dream. We got slightly confused, we don't want to admit it, other people are signing up, and we're too tired to think about anything else. So, we find ourselves signing up and really not knowing what we're doing.

Marketing meetings are completely designed for this. It's an orchistrated attack agains us. In most of them now days, they won't even hand out the paperwork until "the close" comes. Why? They don't want you reading all of that with a fresh mind! NO WAY! They want you tired and beaten down before you check the oversized box that says, "YES! I would be a FOOL if I didn't give you ALL of my money right now!".

Ask, if you can, up front for the paperwork. Tell them you have heard the pitch before, and you'd really like to go ahead and sign up now before you have to leave. Say whatever you'd like to say. Get the paperwork, and read the fine print first.

I got a piece of marketing material not too long ago. It's a sixteen page journal designed to look like a real newspaper. They do a very good job at it, too. In this particular issue, one company appeared to have a HUGE exclusive written about them. I quickly browsed to the end of the article, without reading anything, looking for somehting in particular... ahh, there it was... at the end of the article, it says that the preceding was a paid advertisement. That the thing you just read was paid for by the company it's about. That nobody verified ANY of the information, and that the reader should consider it a form of paid advertisement. It further indicates that the journal is not a financial journal and that the reader should do their own due diligance. It concludes by saying that it provided the paid advertisement as a form of entertainment and that they hope you enjoyed yourself. In other word, "We enjoyed having you, we hope you enjoyed being had."

Now when I read the article, knowing full well who wrote it, who paid for it to be in there, and that nothing was validated or verified... it came off in a TOTALLY different light.

Read the fine print first. It will save you time, energy, and, yes, even money.
